I have been on the path to cleaning up my diet for quite some time now. I will admit it has been a continued work in progress. It did not happen all at once but I am pretty pleased with where I am now. Noticing all the positive changes I was feeling from cleaning up my diet got me thinking about other ways to care for and nurture my body. After reading so many nutrition labels, I started reading the labels on everything. It is amazing how many words I cannot pronounce on my shampoo bottle. From there, I set out to clean up my beauty regimen as well as clean up the products we are using in our home. For the last couple of years we have been making our own laundry soap. I know exactly what goes into it, it saves me a ton of money, and my clothes look great. I wanted to apply this same level of care with my skincare products. That is when I reached out to Trina about the possibility of trying her products. Boy, am I glad I did.
This is the Fran's Primal Wod Package - (Named after one of the most notorious CrossFit girls wods - Fran 21-15-9 Thrusters and Pull-ups. I just did it last week. Ugh) It consists of:
-One Primal Pit Stick (Unscented, Lavender or Forest)
-One Dirty Mouth Primal Toothpowder in Peppermint, Spearmint, Cinnamon, Cool Orange or Anise
-One Primal Hand Repair (tin or stick)
I've photographed and included my thoughts on a few of the products from this package.
Quite often after a CrossFit workout, my hands will look like this, or much worse. This is where the primal hand repair stick comes in handy.
The Primal Hand Repair Stick works wonders. It is thick but really smooth. It makes my hands feel extremely soft and moisturized, while helping to keep the calluses from cracking from getting too dry.
You can still feel the softening effects long after it appears to have worn off. I take it to the gym with me every day now.
The Torn Up Primal Skin Repair is great for those times when my hands tear and the result is cracked, dry calluses. It is the size of a lip balm, so it is the perfect size to completely cover the problem area. It can be a little messy but it definitely does the trick.
Why, yes this is a very awkward photo of me applying deodorant, thanks for noticing! It's taken post workout too, so I look extra sweaty. This is the Primal Pit Stick. I was skeptical at first as to whether or not this could hold up to the amount of sweat I would throw it's way. When I workout, I sweat like it's my career. BUT, I was pleasantly surprised. Any day I don't offend the noses of others is a good day. The best part about it is that it only has 3 ingredients. Yep, only 3! (Organic coconut oil, baking soda (aluminum free) and organic pure filtered beeswax). My immediate thought was that if it only takes these 3 ingredients for a deodorant to work, why is there so much crap in store bought deodorant?
I got the toothpowder in Spearmint flavor. When you open the tin, the smell of spearmint is strong and very refreshing.
You wet your toothbrush and dip it into the toothpowder.
I thought it would taste as good as it smells, but I was wrong. The taste of baking soda and clay is quite strong. It definitely takes some getting used to. However, my mouth did feel very clean after using it. It is a very fine powder, so it is not gritty at all. It doesn't foam up like traditional toothpaste from a tube. Even though I did not like the taste of it, I would still choose to use it just based on it's ingredients.
This is the Infinity and Beyond Primal Face Package with the Added Primal Face Treatment - Fire and Ice. It includes:
-Ocean Primal Face Cleanser, 2 oz.
-Infiniti Primal Face Toner, 2 oz.
-Beyond Primal Face Serum. 0.5 oz.
I've photographed and included my thoughts on a few of the products from this package as well.
This is the Ocean Primal Face Wash
You put a few drops into your palm and then massage into wet or dry skin.
It actually had more of a lather than I expected it to. It is a nice light face wash that leaves no reside and makes my skin feel clean and refreshed without drying it out. I have combination skin and most facial cleansers dry my face out. I have always been very selective about which products I could use on my face.
This is the Beyond Primal Face Serum. To apply, simply drop a couple of drops of the serum onto each cheek, forehead and chin, and massage into skin.
It keeps my face feeling smooth and hydrated all day. I have been using this as part of my morning skin care routine. Below are some things the serum is also supposed to help with:
-Reduce inflammation and redness caused by acne
-Rapidly heal damaged tissues and current acne breakouts
-Reduce wrinkles and fine lines
-Diminish acne and acne scars and prevent further breakouts
-Fade age spots and discolorations (rosacea, melasma)
-Improve texture and skin tone Improve rosacea, eczema and rashes
-Hydrate and rejuvenate aging skin
-Enhance cellular repair
This is the Beyond Primal Face Moisturizer. This is to be applied to clean, dry skin. I like the feel of this on my skin but I only use it at night, or if I am not leaving the house as it has a greasy feel to it and leaves my face looking very shiny. I have found this moisturizer to be another great solution for the dry, cracked calluses on my hands as well.
This is the Infiniti Primal Face Toner. To use this, you just lightly spritz it on your face. There is something so refreshing about this. Most toners I have used in the past, require you to use a cotton ball or tissue to dab it on your face. I love just being able to spritz my face with it. It has a very strong smell that I don't quite love, but the feel of it far outweighs the smell.
This is the Fire and Ice Primal Face Treatment. I have a love/hate relationship with these. It is one of those "Hurts so good" type of things. Step 1 is the Fire - You apply drop to each cheek, forehead and chin, rub it in, and let it go to work. You can definitely feel the burn. Cayenne pepper is one of the main ingredients and you can definitely smell it and feel it. It feels like being super embarrassed and having a sunburn at the same time. I kept looking in the mirror to see if my face was bright red, but it wasn't. After about 15 minutes, you apply the Ice. It has a nice cooling effect that brings your skin back to a normal temperature. I LOVE these treatments. I really enjoyed the hot and cold sensations and how my skin felt afterwards. I did make the mistake of getting the Fire on my lips. It burned and for a long time. That is a mistake you will only make one time. Later in the day when I showered, once I got my face wet, the burning sensation from the Fire came back over my entire face. I wasn't expecting that at all. But like I said, I liked the burning sensation.
Overall, I really enjoyed these products. Many of them I would like to continue using on a permanent basis. It is such a great feeling to know exactly what each ingredient is and to know that they are all natural, certified organic, cruelty free, vegan, gluten free, non-toxic etc. Switching over to more natural, chemical free products does take some adjusting to. There are so many different chemicals that go into most products to produce the fruity fragrances, and rich, foamy lathers we are all so used to. These products all have very earthy scents that take some getting used to. But once I reminded myself that it's not about the smell of the beauty products, it's all about the way my skin feels and treating my skin with care and proper nourishment, I was instantly in love. I love the idea of "feeding" my skin as I would my body. I can't wait to start applying the same principles to my hair care. My hair could use a little TLC.
